The After-Class Effect

Have you ever wondered why you seem to return what you learned in class right after the bell? You need to read on.

What is this effect? Nothing, just a term Andy made up for those who have struggled years after years of ineffective learning. Although it could be bad teaching, too, we will focus on what you, as learners, could do.

Everyone's had an English lesson before. To be fair, it's more like 10,000 lessons. As kids, our memories work very well but our input was poorly developed. The result is, we tend to remember the frame instead of the content which we didn't fully understand. This can be discouraging. 10, 20 years have gone by. As adults, what used to be gibberish becomes something we could understand. The problem is, we can't remember as well as before, and every time is like a new lesson! It's a pity when you finally want to learn real English, you just can't seem to hold on to it. That's why we need to learn about what you could do after each lesson.

Here's 3 Es as tips to longer-lasting After-Class Effect.

  1. Emphasize

  2. Expend

  3. Expose

This may sound counter-intuitive but "don't try to learn everything". Just as a teacher shouldn't try to teach everything in a lesson, you shouldn't be so "greedy". Instead of such a mindset, we should really just emphasize one key concept, three new words, and leave the rest to notes.

Once you follow this guideline, learning is much less burdened. It's still not stress-free but it shouldn't be so, either. With this new concept from the teacher, you "overthink" it. Take our previous Sunday Chat for instance. The concept is "language exchange". What you should focus on isn't so much about trying to make sense of everything the foreign speaker said. That's merely the "what" of the topic. In [Free The language], we expect our learners to be advanced learners, to learn in an advanced way. Expand the idea of the topic and think about "why" and "how". As for new words, you may take as many notes as possible and ask up to three questions for them. This way, the speaker would appreciate your participation and you wouldn't tire him/her.

Finally, you finished the lesson, and it is time for your own learning. You put yourself in the environment. Make no mistake that the environment isn't any an English-speaking country but anywhere you are. You are the environment! "Whoever only learns in the classroom, is never going to be an independent learner", obviously, you may quote us on this.

Suppose you just finished learning with your teacher. What you could do is expose what you acquired into the real world. Who's there to stop you singing in the shower? Who's there to stop you from writing online? Who's there to stop you from talking in English with your pet (More)? Most people stopped learning in the first 10 minutes of the lesson, some make it until the end, but only the best learners make it last outside of the classroom and without supervision. That is what you should do.

Follow these three tips, and we guarantee... NOTHING! 🤣🤣🤣

We wish we could say that this is the way and you'll never need to worry about anything else. We seriously can't because that's what a business would sound like, using your inherited greed against you. Real education is difficult in the world of consumers but we will keep doing what's right.
