2019/05/21 17:07, last week I oversaw a piece of fun news.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Wang Chuan-hung the owner of an immigration consulting firm was released on bail on Tuesday (May 21) after being questioned by prosecutors for allegedly selling fake Philippine passports to Taiwanese to enable them to attend American international schools.

Of course, this gets me started again.

  1. featured/star schools

  2. English/foreign Schools

  3. The myth of a prepared "brighter future"

To clarify, for featured/star schools I meant those that may be based on science or those in a specific district that is popular; English schools such as Taipei American/European school. People seem to always assume that a better reputable school is going to guarantee better prospects for their children. Do you agree with that?

Let's not rule out the actual number of people who turned out to be great in this assumption. There are obviously people who got what they need in those schools but I'm here to argue that it's seldom the school that matters but the efforts of the individuals and the support from family that made good students great.

We don't get to compare with or have a close look at different cases other than those of our own children but ask yourselves this: can you tell the difference between a child who's pushed to adulthood and a child who's led to adulthood. It's easier to force something on to a minor because he/she isn't capable of independence yet but sooner or later, that "easy way" is going to backfire sooner or later. The same theory applies. We don't guarantee the success or anything of a child standing side by side with them but this kid is almost always going to be one of your best friends. I... I really believe in this. However, just for the record, this whole "companionship method" doesn't mean "100% reason with your kid" as many of parents from a newer generation. They turn the hierarchy of family upside down while thinking that it's equal. It's not equal until you and your child are both adults... That's one subtle difference people tend to miss and the main cause of raising ... brats (to be polite).

Like Taipei American School (TAS), the school is approved by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the de facto U.S. embassy in Taiwan. Students are also required to take an English aptitude test when applying.

Schools such as Taipei American School were never meant for us (Taiwanese). While some may argue that since it operates in Taiwan, it should allow all who lives here to have the equal chance to attend, the purpose of these schools with special backgrounds may not be to provide "a better education for Taiwanese people" but to provide "the education for a specific group in Taiwan". By specific, I meant those of foreign origin but settle in Taiwan. Let's be fair. Our education system, as well as the culture and people are likely to suit only for Asians and not those from westerners.

While most of us would/could embrace their education, it's difficult to ask them to do the same to ours. The school hours, the teaching methods, the parents... the list can go on.

"They already chose to be in Taiwan. Why do them this favor?"

Well... I guess it's because we respect differences. At least, I'd like to be positive and put it that way. It may be due to the fact that there was U.S. military that was stationed here. You're welcome to fact-check it for your own interest.

BUT........................................... put all that aside, yeah I would love to go to TAS rather than a local one to be honest, simply because I don't really fit in here. That being said, I don't regret having been to any school I've attended.

Now, it's clear why they restrict Taiwanese to enroll in foreign schools in Taiwan, isn't it?
