What Unites People?

Everyone knows how powerful people can be when united and yet we're not very united people. How come?
Wolf packs, gangs, mobs, departments, startups, religions...etc. What they all have in common is the same goal, to survive, to business, or to peace. Unity brings organization and distribution of power soon comes after. That does it, right? Not quite.
From time to time, we see groups argue, more often than they bond, which is contradicting given the original goals to build the team. But it happens.
When thinking of this topic, we started to be aware of what unites people and the answer is this-- an enemy in common. There is nothing more unifying to a self-fighting group of people than knowing that an outsider is trying to sabotage what they have. It's a pity to say this but the influence of hate takes effect at an instant while a goal in common takes time and more effort.
Here in Taiwan, we've always struggled between pro-Taiwan or pro-China groups. You see them put on a show about fighting most of the time. Commentators, critics, and netizens alike, all make fun of or feel numb about this phenomenon. Yet, something came along and it may have brought unity to the Taiwanese communities, at least to an extent-COVID 19 to the rescue!
Isn't it funny how it takes a deadly virus to finally allow us to agree that safety tops all? Look at the streets and the public transportations. People started to take initiatives before the government announcement. Just like that, we have entered day 1 on no schooling and many of us are excited about how this unity might just beat the fastest record of COVID de-escalation in two or three weeks.
There will always be some people who distrust the government, some who aren't responsible for their actions, and some who just genuinely wanted to see us fall. It happens! They will succeed unless we outnumber them and educate them. Please know this. If you see evil/bad deeds being done and you stepped aside, you become evil.
The government isn't perfect and neither are the people. Do what we can and we might just get through this together.
